“What is happening right now in the Middle East is very serious. It’s not about discussing who is right or wrong, who fired the first shot or second. The problem is this: it is not a war, it is a genocide that has already killed two thousand children who had nothing to do with this war, who are victims of this war” said President Lula.
He added, “Sincerely, I don’t know how human beings are capable of waging war, knowing that the result of this war will be the death of children and innocents. It is a difficult time.”
Lula then went on to state that his speech would be cut short because he was about to have a call with the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, to negotiate the release of Brazilians in Gaza.
Since the onset of the recent crisis, the Brazilian government has been attempting to extract a group of its citizens in Gaza. Half of the group are sheltering in Rafah, a city in the south of Gaza and bordering Egypt. The other half is awaiting release in the heavily bombarded city of Khan Younes, also in the south of Gaza.
Both groups are to embark on the presidential plane used by Lula himself to travel to Brazil, once their movement through the border into Egypt is authorized.
The group includes seventeen children, nine women, and six men.
Meanwhile, Brazilian Air Force planes have successfully extracted 1,135 Brazilians, as well as their pets, from Israel since the beginning of the conflict.
